The Dalai Lama: "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times)

John F. Kennedy: "Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom."

President Theodore Roosevelt: "The great body of our citizens shoot less as times goes on. We should encourage rifle practice among schoolboys, and indeed among all classes, as well as in the military services by every means in our power. Thus, and not otherwise, may we be able to assist in preserving peace in the world... The first step – in the direction of preparation to avert war if possible, and to be fit for war if it should come – is to teach men to shoot!" – President Theodore Roosevelt's last message to Congress.

i could go on forever with these, but you guys get the point.

Doctors vs Gunowners

Doctors

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services.
Now think about this:

Gun Owners

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.
(Yes, that's 80 million)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.
Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous
than gun owners
Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE
DOCTOR. Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!
Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on
lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic
and seek medical attention!

I don't currently own a gun. I used to have a 38. Now I have an awesome Smith & Wesson pocket knife. A Smith & Wesson hand gun is on my wish list. I was thinking another 38, but I'm open to suggestions. On brand, too. You guys know ALOT more about guns than me!
And I definitely plan on passing on this info.

I am really leaning toward picking up a Beretta .45 I was shooting at a freinds house about a month ago. It was wonderful and easy to shoot for a .45!
That may be overkill for you though so i would think a 9mm or another .38 would be to your liking. Again I like the Beretta but a Colt or just about any other make would do if you are just looking for home protection.
you may want to ask, once you do find a gun you like, if anyone has that specific pistol and if they have had a jamming problem.

If you are looking for something reliable for home defense, then a revolver might be your best bet. Not going to have to worry about a jam there like with a semi-auto!!!

just my 2-cents
