The "Reference" issue here is a no brainer matter at all... When you use a certain image, art, drawing, painting etc to make up your own design, it means that you used and utilised it as a "reference" and not totally copying the entirety of the design... But when you totally copied (ie printed then stencilled) the whole image/ idea without any modification or alteration and claim that you are the original creator, then for me that is stealing...

i remember when tattoo shops had (some still do have) HUUUUGE reference book libraries. thats not any different than "googling" an image at all. The same principles apply, if you are copying it exact, you are copying it, portrait or not. if you are referencing it to see what one of something looks like, thats reference. not everyone has a mental library of what a hubcap on a 57 chevy, or a ar15, or a meal worm, etc look like. when i do a lion, i dont travel to africa to get shots of them in action. i google it and copy. when someone says they want a sparkplug all twisted with racing flags, i reference it to make sure i have some of the prominent elements from the actual, and put my spin on it. referencing. bingo! do tatties!
