Default technique advice

When I'm setting an outline it just isn't what I want to deliver. I like nice clean beautiful lines, what are some different techniques that I could use? what helped you guys when you were learning and first started out.

not trying to be mean, but how do you sign your name, or tie your shoes, or do other simple tasks? The physical act of tattooing shouldn't be affected if you have dyslexia.

Learning to pull nice clean lines takes practice and getting a feel for the skin. You can't learn that from an internet forum. Better off paying more attention at the shop while watching. Hand speed and machine speed need to sync up.

this is one of those basic building block things that you really only can learn and gain competency under the guidance of a mentor.

if your current mentor isn't willing or able to teach you in a manner you can absorb and apply...find a better teacher

No need to simplify the question. I understood you 100%.

What I don't respect is that you were blaming your lack of skill on dyslexia. I, like many others will tell you, told you this isn't something you can learn over the internet. If you didn't like my answer, take it in stride and don't get defensive. That kind of attitude will not get you anywhere with most experienced tattoo artists because we hear that BS every single day whether at the shop or online.

k cool

I assumed that.

Lonnie I wasn't blaming anything on anything. I was just trying to explain the situation, cuz it is a frustrating one.

the mentor I've got isn't a very good one. he said "here's a gun, have fun" so I'm not getting any guidence at all. I was just hoping for a couple extra tips from people with experience. I'm not looking for a quick fix apprenticeship thing. I've gotta find a new shop for that...

all I wanted was technique advice...

this is something that you need to be shown in person. I could type all day about the subtle differences that different hand motions, speeds, angles and depths create, but it would only make sense to someone who has experienced it firsthand with their own eyes. The words would mean nothing on their own.

Find a new shop to be an apprentice. Learning bad habits or wrong technique will only hurt you in the long run. Good Luck.

from what you've said it's pretty damn clear...GET A NEW MENTOR aim high, as high as you can possibly fathom. the less you settle for when it comes to your apprenticeship the greater your potential right out of the gate.

99% of artists i've known and worked with, myself included, have had 'complicated' apprenticeships. you have to be made of pretty stern stuff to overcome crap like that, so be smart about it from the get go and make it easier on yourself
