..
that is just how it is in tattooing. you will have to work twice as hard.

that will change and has started to shift but theres no bra burning going on Ive noticed in tattooing yet.

on my mirror it says, I have the penis so I make the rules.... hahahahaa

To me , Tattooing is much like the mafia. If someone doesnt "bring" you in you 're not in. simple as that. I get really tired of people whining about not getting an apprenticeship. You didnt work hard enough! How much do you really care about tattooing if you dont want to work to get in? I know people that wanted to be dentists but didnt want to pay for school, that does not mean I am having dental work in a kitchen.
You can only teach yourself so much, of what you dont know!

Hey degypsegrl!
Look up Sue Moerder at Jerrys Tattooz in Philly.
Tell her Bunny & Taz said hi and ask her what it's like
being a lady tattooing in Philly.

Then look up ladies like Katie Sellergren, who is a great tattoo artist,
(she does beautiful lettering) and see if she'll give you some insight.

Yeah Brandon!
If the moms knew what their little girls were gonna go through
they wouldn't take their kids to the tattoo shops and ask them
if they could teach them to tattoo would they???? ha ha ha

I admit I do watch them because I love tattooing; BUT the "ink" shows
have helped to create a culture of scratchers!
I know that was not the intent of the artists involved but it is what it is!

Hmmm, I've read what everyone has said. I really do have a lot of respect for the imdustry. What happened in my situation was that I had talked and talked about learning to tatt for years, with never the chance to do so. I'd rather be modest, but honestly I'm a pretty good regular artist, so a lot of people have said to me, well, why don't you just get a kit and figure it out? I checked out the laws in all diferent sates about it, and yeah, were I live - it says go to school - not get an aprenticeship - school. There are schools, but I don't know where - I might be able to use a GI Bill for that - that's an idea - but I'm moving soon. Supposed to be April, but it's not certain. I'm just finding out that we're moving to the Columbus, GA area. Haha - didn't know I'd be heading out that way. Now I know. Now sh** doesn't look as hopeless. And yes, I (a bit red in the face) will put down all my tatt equipment, and wait till I get out there and find an aprenticeship - hopefully with my hubby's support. If I do that I'm gonna need a job too though. I don't know if there's such thing as a part time welder - that might be interesting. So lets all sigh for relief - I will stop the "scratching." I did want to dive in, but I also want to do it right. That's why I put it out there like that. I don't keep my own seacrets, no closets full of bones. I also didn't know that I was going somewhere that does have tatt shops - that's always subject to change though. I am in a military family after all.
The question was what the heck do you do if you absolutely can't get and aprenticeship. You can't watch the Whole Enchelada, there aren't any DVD's that teach you. I don't know about YouTube having anything. I did see something out there on the net that was a video - but it didn't teach hardly anything, and I know it skipped a lot of steps. So I guess the answer to what to do, is don't do it without an aprenticeship if you want any kind of respect from the tattoo world. Cool, I'll just keep busy for a while with my art. By the time I can get my training I'll just have a cr*p load of Flash, ready for the angle I want to take into tatting.

This sounds every encouraging Crafty Cat!

I have never seen a military base that didn't have a tattoo
shop right outside the gate though.....LOL.

I am just kidding of course but the two seem to go hand in hand.

One of my new bestfriends (also a Gypsy Queen) works right outside the
gate in Aberdeen, Maryland and there must be 7 tattoo shops within a
two mile stretch on route 40 there.

I know there are plenty of shops down in GA so you should
be able to hopefully find something.

Good luck in your quest, I am kinda jealous as i wish I had the talent but
I kinda recognize I really wouldn't make a good tattooer so I have never
even considered it. I am the one the tattooers LOVE....a customer!!!!
ha ha ha ha.

Cya,

Thank you Brandon for letting me know about the tattoo instruction schools. I was wondering and wanted to hear the opinion of someone who would know.
Philly is really like that? Wow- I must be sheltered in suburbia bliss here. I wouldnt think a big city like that would be subjective to a biased narrow attitude concerning tattood chicks.

*No crying in baseball*
noted- and appreciated.
Lay it on me- its what I need!

You are all fabulous..

I definitly second that. I got started in this "scratching" because I had friends not want to pay $100 an hour, friends that love my art and encouraged me to take the next step. I was also unaware of forums like this and that there was anykind of support? for newbies. I just remember the world when I started getting tatts - all the scratchers I'd seen, unaprenticed professionals, and proffessionals unwilling to take apprentices. That was just getting tatts. Hell I even got a tatt from a scratcher - I hate it - the guy couldn't even draw - and I didn't even let him finish it. Maybe I should have known better when I started, because of that, but I figured - at least I know how to draw - I should have a leg up on that guy. Haha - now I know that tattoo schools are also cr*p, next to not getting training at all. Maybe for some reason Kansas thinks if you send them to school and regulate the learning experience then it would be better in the end. What are they thinking? One on one learning in most hands on feilds is always better. I got one on one learning in welding. I was lucky though the army sent me to school for that. There are welders out there that just buy the equipment and teach themselves too. The thing is in welding you can get certified as a welder and it will make it easier to get a job, but you don't actually need it to get a job. A lot of companies will test your welding skills before they hire you. So yeah - I get it. The aprenticeship is the certification, and you've got to have it. I can live with that. Whenever I finally get to Georgia - I'm going to walk into all the tatt shops and check them out and ask for an aprenticeship. No, is going to sound like, ask me next week.
