Krash.....I'm guessing by the fact ya called them "guns" that you probably haven't done an apprenticeship? If I'm correct that would be my first suggestion. My second suggestion is invest in better machines.....if ya don't have the cash for something brand new look look for someone who's selling one they don't use anymore....I know someone who has a huge piece of his collection up for sale right now who has some really nice machines at some real decent prices. If you want to pm me your shop info I'll be happy to try to help ya get those running better untill you can find or afford something better.

If you don't know how to tune your machine , then replacing springs is probably not going to help....and if you know how to tune machines, then you know how to tell if its springs or something else...

First of:
Cutting corner when it comes to gear is not the smartest thing to do.
"By cheap - spend several times"
However, even the crappier machine can be tuned to performed decent.
There it can be lots of things going wrong with the machine.
1- bad coils
2- wrong springs
3- bad shimming
4- defective frame geometry
5- running a none ferrous machine frame with no yoke
6- carbon buildup between spring/contact screw or coils/ abar
7- wrong voltage
8- bar or wrong capacitor
9- bad grommets
10- bent needles
11- bar terminals/ soldering
12- bad insulation
bla bla bla bla...
...or a combination of all the things mentioned above.

If you don't have an apprenticeship, spend some more time drawing and getting an apprenticeship, as all this questions will be answered as you go with your mentor.

The machine doesn't make the artist but knowing your gear inside out can will help you spot most common problem.
