Default Need Advice on a White Tattoo

Hellllllo to whoever reads this and helps me out...
ok so I have a situation. About a week ago I got a tattoo on my wrist with white ink. The artist who did the tattoo sounded knowledgeable about white ink and said he was comfortable doing the tattoo as long as I understood that it would heal very subtle and the color might not be as bright as I was expecting. So I decided he sounded smart enough and his portfolio was amazing enough that I thought he could handle my fairly simple and small tattoo. Well he did a great job, took his time to get it perfect. The color looked great when he was done, heres a pic:
[IMG]<a href="http://s648.photobucket.com/albums/uu202/franannlau/?action=view&current=1043191-R1-026-11A.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu202/franannlau/1043191-R1-026-11A.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>[/IMG]
this picture isn't the best and doesn't show how true the white ink was during healing...
well here's my problem. its been a week and a half and the scab's have healed and now under the scab is literally no tattoo... there is a faint (and i mean very very very faint) pink tint from where the new skin "grew in."
so I definitely want to fix it but I have a few questions.

1) Any suggestions on artist who have worked with white ink?
2) Can I try white ink again over it to get the affect I'm looking for?
3) If I try again on top of the first tattoo will it heal correctly?
4) If you think I should steer away from white ink, what color would you suggest other than black? I say that because I know I don't want black ink on my pale skin, I think its too harsh of a contrast.... hence why I went with white ink. I've seen plenty of pictures of white ink that has healed perfectly and beautifully, what went wrong with mine?

Thanks for your help, opinions, and suggestions! Please help, I really really want this tattoo!!

Just fixing the picture for you. To post on a message board, photobucket has a link to copy and paste that already has the BBCode for you.

From what I've heard about white ink, it isn't something that really works well on it's on. All of the pictures I've ever seen of them have been while they are healing, and have been either scabbed over or puffy.

Hopefully one of the artists on here will see this post when they get over their holiday food comas, and can actually give some advice on it.

The redness will go away eventually. But you just aren't going to see very much white, especially with such pale skin. It sounds like he informed you of that so I don't know what your complaint is.

Look, you're way too pale to be getting just white ink. Get black. It will hold up better over time. Color will likely heal more spotty. I'm guessing you'll request color anyhow and then wonder why it doesn't look as good as the brown dude's black tattoo.

DING DING DING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!

I personally wouldnt have done the tattoo if you insisted on white, & straight colored lettering always looks fuzzy to me over time.

i never tried this before but i wonder how greywashed lettering would look, like a 1-3 drop mix. theoretically it wouldnt be has harsh of a contrast as pure black, but not sure how well the longevity would be without dark edges.

I'm not complaining about anything, I'm asking for advice. Of course his black showed up better than my white, I knew that would happen. What I'm asking is, are there any artist around the Atlanta area that have used white ink successfully? I've seen plenty of tattoos that did not use black ink and healed just fine. So I was asking nicely if anyone had any suggestion or ideas.

It's not the artist, it's the color. White just isn't going to work with you.

Seriously, you're not going to like the effects of red or something 5 years from now if it doesn't at least have a black outline. I'm not talking a week after the tattoo. It won't hold up well over time.

I will say that I like Maetoch's idea of graywash. That might be just what you're looking for.

I dont understand this obsession with a barely noticeable tattoo, it seem like I get this request all the time. For one thing, in the area that your tattoo is in your gonna need to wait at least a couple few months to get it worked on again. Second I would just consider getting the tattoo somewhere else or going with a different design altogether. There are many ways to convey subtleness or delicateness, not just a washed out version of a heavy bold font. I would say that you need to open you horizons as to what you want as far as a tattoo goes. Even though tattoing has come a very long way there are still limitations as to what can be done. And there are unwritten rules that reputable tattoo artist like to follow, one of them being, not doing a tattoo that will disappear in a week or month or year. Maybe a tattoo is not what you really want. Think about that hard, sometimes when your riding the fence its best to just take your time. Id say you got off pretty easy, your tattoo will in all likely hood disappear and not be noticeable to most. I would be thankful of that, and re-evaluate what it is your trying to do or say.

I try to put it like this to those I feel like might be making a mistake. Imagine that you live the early to mid 1900's, and none of you friends have tattoos. Would you still want yours? Cuz I know for f@#kin sure I want mine.

i think the 1-3 drop with drop shadow instead of hardlining would look killer! SUPER f@#kin subtle.. and not harsh.. in no way would i EVER use just white for a tattoo. they dont last, and basically youd have been better off with the guy just blood lining it and leaving it alone.
but then again, to each their own.. ive never seen a tattoo with just white really bang out there EVER. so..
good luck!

I agree, if the tattoo had dark hues in it and possibley blended out to a lighter tone it would hold up better than just plain white, as deran said your skin is way to pail for straight white.

I never tattoo straight white for the same reason most artists don`t..............because it doesn`t hold up and looks like s&!t.

ummm....the point in getting a tattoo is to show it, so going for subtle doesn't make any sense. As far as color letters, the guys have said it, you'll still have problems. Black is, and will be your best option. You've chosen a bold font, and put it in the crease on your wrist. Yup, could've seen that heal coming from a mile. If you want a tattoo, get a better artist to do it, and be willing to be flexible as far as design. Remember, you're not the artist, the guy doing the tattoo is.
"4) If you think I should steer away from white ink, what color would you suggest other than black? I really don't get this. Contrast is one of the MOST important factors in a good tattoo. Not enough contrast will always go to s&!t. Maybe not right away, but eventually. This quote really bothers me. This is what an "educated" public gets us. Hell, this white tattoo is what "educating" artists is getting us. This shouldn't have even been attempted, and for more than one reason.
1. This was a dumb idea from the get go
2. You've only seen pictures of white healed. Bet you've never seen one in person, the internet isn't real life.
3. This artist completely lied to you regardless of his great portfolio
4 This is a classic case of tattooing just for the money.
5 This is a classic case of people getting tattooed, that probably shouldn't be getting tattooed.
etc, etc,etc.

I really don't wanna sound like an ass, but why are you so concerned with not getting black ink??? Why get tattooed at all??? From the way this sounds, perhaps you would be better with a piercing, at least you can take that out. Remember, this is not a fashion accessory, it's for the rest of your life. Tattoos are forever. Get it done right the first time. You seem pretty dead set on what you want, but I'm here to tell you that what you want will not translate well for a tattoo, let alone a tattoo 5,6, 10 years down the road. If you walked into my shop for this tattoo, thats exactly what I would tell you before i let you know that I wouldn't tattoo this.

All in all, this is one of the most ridiculous problems that has come up here lately. A lot of tattooers need to get their s&!t straight and quit playing artist or d**king around on other people's skin. They need to do solid tattoos, period. Customers, need to quit acting like they know what's up. You don't tattoo, and most of your reference for these ideas is from some highly photoshopped pic that has to be real, cause it's on the internet!!! It really all just one big circle of retarded. People see one dumb ass that got some tattoo done, so they want it. The artist doesn't wanna feel inferior, or let money walk out of the door, so he does it. This equals more stupid pictures for more stupid people to look at. Hence, the circle. It really boils down to "everyone gets the tattoo they deserve".

Once again, sorry for the rant, but it had to be said. I really hope you get a great tattoo and mean you no ill will. Best of luck to ya, and happy new year. Hope yours is a good one.
