Saints' Super Bowl win continues to give business in New Orleans a boost in unusual ways
By The Times-Picayune
February 28, 2010, 6:26AM
David Augustine, also known as local hip-hop artist Dee-1, recorded his New Orleans Saints-themed song before the season started in August 2009.

The Times-PicayuneBack then, he never imagined that six months later he would be hearing his song blasting from car stereos and French Quarter clubs while profiting from thousands of downloads from the iTunes Music Store.

"This song superseded anything I've ever done musically," Augustine said of his song, "Bring Em to the Dome," featuring local trumpeter Shamarr Allen.

David is one of many who have managed to profit from the NFL team's success this season by selling something other than sports paraphernalia.

In true New Orleans manner, Saints fans have been expressing themselves through music, art and food. And in the three weeks since the Super Bowl, tattoo parlors, frame shops and even diners all have found ways to capitalize on the team's success.

Aart Accent Tat2's and Piercings on North Rampart Street, for example, has seen an uptick in customers desiring Saints and Super Bowl tattoos.

Shortly after the championship game, fans wanted to display their Saints pride in the most creative ways possible. Brannon Neal, a tattoo artist at Aart Accent, says one of the memorable tattoos he's seen at the shop was a 'Who Dat' tattoo below a woman's pelvic bone.

"It's pride. We've always had it; folks are just figuring out how to show it better," said Jacci Gresham, owner of Aart Accent.

The fleur de lis, a longtime symbol of New Orleans, has been the most requested image at Electric Lady Tattoo on Frenchmen Street. But some people are dressing up their original art with Saints pride since the Super Bowl.

"One guy came in with a fleur de lis already on his arm and got the Lombardi trophy put behind it," Electric Lady tattoo artist Ed Dierringer said.

Dierringer said Electric Lady's Saints-related business went up after the championship game and has been steady ever since.

Fans also are preserving the season by framing mementos such as tickets, autographs and newspaper front pages.

Fredrick Guess, owner of Fredrick Guess Studio on Royal Street, has had his share of Saints-related framing jobs since the Super Bowl. He's also gotten other unique framing requests, such as a painting of boiled crawfish sitting on top of newspapers bearing Saints headlines from this season.

Still other businesses are pleasing Saints fans through their appetites. The "Who Dot" Burger is a new menu item at Dot's Dinner at 10701 Jefferson Highway.

Signs in the restaurant describe the sandwich as "1/3 lb. burger with 'Deuce' slices of bacon and covered in cheddar 'Brees' served with a side of 'Bush's' baked beans."

Owner Larry Katz says the burger premiered two weeks before the Super Bowl and an uptick in sales took place about a week later. People were attracted to the meal by the name and description alone. It will remain on the menu for about one more week as the Saints wave dies down.

While some are taking advantage of recent Saints success, others have long been on the bandwagon. Sushi Brothers on St. Charles Avenue has offered the Saints Black and Gold Roll for about a year, along with other New Orleans-themed rolls. The roll was always popular at the sushi restaurant but in recent weeks it has become a hot item among customers.

The Saints Black and Gold Roll is made with coconut shrimp tempura and cream cheese wrapped in mango and avocado with black tobikko to give it the black and gold look.

"What's great about the roll is that it's all cooked. Nothing in the roll is raw, so everyone can enjoy it,' said Phuong Nguyen, manager of Sushi Brothers.
