Question building coils

Hi, as my name suggests I am a plumber not a tattooist, but a good friend of mine is. A while ago he challenged me to build a jail style machine for fun...I made one from an electric egg whisk, a pen, a battery and lots of electrical tape...I've since tried making slightly more professional looking frames, but with a twist. I have carved 2oak frames and 3stone frames...I have bought some cheap machines to take coils and a-bars from...my frames seem to work I now would like to make some coils for my machines...I stress that these machines are purely for display purposes, so I could just buy cheap coils and cover them in colourful wraps but I feel like that's cheating...I'd like to know a couple of things...is there a certain direction to wrap the copper wire round? I read that it could change the polarity? What gauge copper should I use? I asked my friend but he said he doesn't know too much on the building side...as I said it doesn't really matter as they won't be used on anyone but I'd really like to make them properly...hope to hear from you guys soon...thanks in advance
