Default Lots of Questions lol

Heyo all

I am apprenticing as a tattooist, and I have a few questions that I'm not entirely sure about, even after going through the boards...

1. "Machine" or "Gun"? I've heard "gun" is bad...my boss calls it a gun and gets kinda pissed when I correct him lol

2. Pulse Machines. Corsair 12-Wrap Coils and Specialist 8-wrap coils...good choice? My boss says have a really fast style and that I would benefit from faster liner speeds.

3. Mixing inks. I wanna go with Waverly (when in Rome), but how to mix the inks? Do you mix them straight or do you use some type of thinning agent or something?

4. Eikon Power supplys...yea or nay?

5. Where do you get your Starbright White from? What do you use for your really black stuff and where do you recommend getting it from?

And lastly (for now lol)...

How long does a tatoo apprenticeship take on average? I'm getting impatient...I have to get tattooing or I'm going to go f@#king nuts!!!!

Thanks a lot for everything!!!

Chris

hey man thanks for the questions, however if your learning from someone the knowledge should be given to you at the studio YOU aRe AT! however apprenticeship is LOOOONG and slow because its important so you should not be in a hurry, our apprentices hang out and work every day they absolutely possibly can of 1 YEAR before they are allowed to even think about tattooing a human being, as it should be. There is a LOT of variables, insanity, issues, and surprises that will start to jump up on you as your career starts, and you should sit back and absoreb every minute of what you can WHILE you can, for as long as you can from as many sources as you can. you are embarking upon a serious journey full of responsibility, and liability. Do not hurry your apprenticeship, in fact you should be greatful for every day you DONT have to tattoo... use them, enjoy them, your time will come.

Our apprenticeses are put through constant workloads of paperwork, client scheduling , customer service, sterilization, drawing, stencil creation, sanitation, scrubbing, polishing, graphics and computer work, retail sales, supply ordering, errand running, and get to watch 10 artists + constant guests tattoo in so many ways it makes MY head spinn, and tear down each machine and station, often setting up machines and stations till late in the evenings.

We want our apprentices to KNOW exactly every step of whats happening before they go jumping into anyones skin. We want them to be so engrained into the studio and the tattoo life that they are basically as comfortable as a professional by the time they sit down to actually hit flesh.

1. "Machine" or "Gun"? I've heard "gun" is bad...my boss calls it a gun and gets kinda pissed when I correct him lol

its a machine any half a fag tattooer knows that. a gun is in no way similar, I use both items in question and have never mistaken one for the other, thank god. I would hate for someone to break in my house and as I reach to protect my family pull a tattoo machine, thats like a wierd sci fi concept or something, and Im sure my clients would be pissed if I were to shoot them in the arm accidentally with a .45 acp instead of tatzappin em.

2. Pulse Machines. Corsair 12-Wrap Coils and Specialist 8-wrap coils...good choice? My boss says have a really fast style and that I would benefit from faster liner speeds.

maybe he has a strategy for your tattooing, i think slow repition and low speeds are way safer for beginners, however whatever works is cool. liners 8s are good - shaders 10s are fine - smaller the better for the first year or two.

3. Mixing inks. I wanna go with Waverly (when in Rome), but how to mix the inks? Do you mix them straight or do you use some type of thinning agent or something?

waverly, is the way to go mixing inks is an artform and Im not gonna give out the "ansient chinese secrets" on the internet because people that dont deserve it will repicate it and probably f@#k it all up just order it from waverly

4. Eikon Power supplys...yea or nay? theres nothing wrong with them

5. Where do you get your Starbright White from? What do you use for your really black stuff and where do you recommend getting it from?

I dont handle ordering supplies, our apprentices do therefore they are learning how to order their own and mange their own accounts with the companies, I think they use KINGPIN for that though, as they are selling my book. The truth is I really dont even know.

And lastly (for now lol)...

How long does a tatoo apprenticeship take on average? I'm getting impatient...I have to get tattooing or I'm going to go f*****g nuts!!!!

one year minimum. keep it in your pants, learn. be greatful for every day and learn as much as you can, impatients is simply immaturity shining through, this is a serious career, a serious way to make a serious living. I can already tell from your questions you wouldnt be ready if you were at our studios.

but feel free to ask us everything you want, Im sure we will all answer these kinda questions if they sit up on this board long enough.

keep us posted.

Cool

Thanx for all your answers, they were great and candid, which is very much appreciated!

I ask them because my boss is extremely old school about a lot of things...like not using mags (14 rounds are the shader. Period and end of story) because they create "scarring". He will not use them ever. He uses Pumas, which I never liked, even when I first started, but that's how he does his work, and it's good for what he does...he is just discovering Intenze inks because his previous apprentice ordered them (I could go on and on lol...like a power supply from the mid 1600s)...

...don't get me wrong, he is quite good, but he is very close-minded about learning himself, so I want to ask all the questions I can and learn all that I can from the best people that I can to gain as much knowledge as I can to be the best tattooist that I can

My days consist of making needles, set-up, teardowns, etc, etc...you know the drill, I'm sure lol, and I have learned more than I can say. It's pretty pathetic when you DREAM of tearing down your bosses equipment lol.

I am NOT ready to tattooo on my own, as in booking my clients, people sitting down in my chair and me going hard at it, my question was more in the way of tattooing under supervision My first tattoo is already on the go on my bosses chest, and it's looking quite good. Another session, and it will be done (my speed isn't up there yet, and that's why it's taking so long lol).

I thank you once again for your great answers, as they have really helped me put a lot of things in perspective. Patience is not one of my virtues (I am very much a person who learns my doing, and not being able to "do" is my problem), and I realize that, so thank you for the slap...I'm just so unbelieveably stoked about doing tattoos that I'm going crazy...it's all I can think about!

I could go on for hours, but you guys have lives too, so I'll just throw things at you in small doses lol

You all have a great day, and I'll be sure to post again if i need another slap (or in Brandon's case, a pistol-whip lol)

Chris

Here is my first tatt as it is...like I said, it isn't done yet, but I'll be adding the rest of the shading next session

I was nervous as hell, as it was m first session, and I had my boss, his old apprentice, and my bosses friend sitting there watching over me, and there is a cover-up in there too. It was/is a hell of an experience, and it was great having them help giude me along.

BTW, this is a custom piece I drew out myself...and we don't use stencils ever, so everything is drawn on the body by hand. I'll post it when it's finished, too.

Please note that I will be fixing a whole platter of things on this that I don't like, so it will look quite different when it's finished

The shop I'm working at doesn't use stencils at all...the thought behind it is this: a customer comes to a shop to get artwork put on their bodies, and stenciling is someone else's artthat you're just transposing onto someone's skin. The art should reflect the tattooist just as much as the original piece.

it's great for many things, but with me, I am a perfectionist, and if something isn't like the original art (especially if it's somethingg that I designed) it irks me that it isn't exactly right.

I would also be incredibly uncomfortable doing a portrait without a stencil. The person wanting the portrait doesn't want my INTERPRETATION of the person, they want the person.

When I break away and start doing my own thing in the future, I'm sure that I will be using stencils, but learning as I am is also good...both have their benefits

Talkatcha soon!!!
