Practice skin for portrait learning?
Okay this may sound silly and rookie-ish, and i have never used these or tried anything like them cause im too busy doing real tattoos, but im at a point where i feel very comfortable about doing portraits and full color portraits, but instead of just 'trying' it on someone first i was wondering how well these things really are.
are there any deluxe practice skins or ones that are just like tatooing someone? or am i better off tatooing a cat or something? has any one tried these and are they worth a s&!t?

dude, i think you know the answer to that hahaha, there is nothing like the real thing. i know plenty of people that started doing portraits on close friends for dirt cheap at first. f@#k man, even try doing one on like your thigh. but practice skins are f@#king junk

Re: Practice skin for portrait learning?
Pig skin is a nice alternative to practice skins, and you can get it from most butchers (I mean a proper butcher, not the ones in a local supermarket or green grocers).
Practice skins don't feel or react the way human skin does, and pig skin is the next closet thing. The only problem I have found, is you can only work for an hour or so before needing to put it in the freezer for a while, other wise it begins to go to soft.
Another word of caution, to keep in the back of your mind while working with pig skin: It take ink really well. This means you may work faster than you would tattooing a client. The colors are also more vibrant because you don't have blood mixing with the inks in the skin.
But it is a good medium to practice new techniques.

I would say your own thigh or a friend's that's down to donate some skin. I never tattooed fruit or practice skin or none of that s&!t, real skin from the beginning, including my own.

Chances are if you are comfortable enough to were you are thinking about trying it. Then you are ready you just want a "confidence booster" Ok it's not going to be perfect but put it on a regular for free and call it a day. Good luck.
