ANAHEIM -- The Braves placed Jason Heyward on the 15-day disabled list following Sunday's game against the Angels, as he continues to experience pain and discomfort in his right shoulder.
In a corresponding move, the Braves recalled Wilkin Ramirez from Triple-A Gwinnett, and transferred Peter Moylan to the 60-day disabled list to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Ramirez.
The decision to place Heyward on the DL culminates a weekend in which Heyward's ailing right shoulder flared up after batting practice on Friday, and caused him to be a late scratch for Saturday's game.
n Saturday, Heyward was evaluated by Angels team physician Lewis Yocum, and nothing new was discovered in the right shoulder -- which caused Heyward to miss six starts last week. Heyward was used as a defensive replacement in the 12th inning of Saturday's game.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said on Sunday morning that nothing had changed with regard to Heyward's condition, and did not indicate that the club intended to place Heyward on the DL. However, he also did not rule out that option.
"Maybe going into the National League games, you don't want to be short on the bench," Gonzalez said at the time.
Heyward missed six starts after he exited a May 10 game against the Nationals because of numbness in his right hand and forearm. An ensuing MRI exam revealed he had an inflamed right shoulder, and Heyward received a cortisone injection on May 12 to relieve some of the pain.
Heyward has struggled throughout the month of May, batting .098, with nearly four times as many strikeouts (15) as hits (four) in 41 at-bats.
