Update:

Shana
, Britt, and family went to court yesterday, The neighbor was charged with Felony Aggravated Animal Cruelty, and the neighbor plead 'not guilty,' of course. They will be going back to court in July 25th for the Status Hearing.

They have run into a few snags with the case:
1.

Due to conflicts of interest, neither the DA nor the Burke's civil suit lawyer can represent the family.
Can you believe that?
-The Case was assigned a new DA. The DA apparently was involved in another case with the alleged dog-murdering neighbor sometime in the past.

Wander what that was about?
- The lawyer covering their civil suit had to step down because he is involved with their neighbor's home-owner insurance company. Now, the criminal-neighbor has decided to file suit against his home insurance company (b/c they refused to pay for the lawsuit brought against him for killing Gage), causing a conflict of interest for the lawyer's representation of the case.(The insurance company's reasoning for not paying is that the actions were criminal, by the way).

2.To top all of that off, the neighbor has decided to sue the Burke family for defamation of character. Because everyone everywhere knows what has happened, it seems that 'Mister-Neighbor-Dog-Killer-Guy' is not very popular. Since he shot Gage, his 'comfort and quality of living' is not so nice now.

-I'd like to respond to that by saying that this man brought this on himself. This man shot a dog who was in his own fenced-in back yard. This man made a conscious decision to take another life - a life that was gentle and loving... a life that was cherished and well-cared for.

3.The only appropriate lawyer that the Burkes have found to now take their case requires payment up front. Shana and Britt are not prepared for those fees.

How are we going to fight and make sure that justice is served?
1.

You all signed the petition that Sherry Wells designed, which was a huge help.

2.

I have opened a paypal account so that everyone can make donations toward these lawyer fees.

Whether it is 50 cents or 50 dollars donated by a person, it all counts - every small amount adds up, so spread the word!
So far, people have donated $180 toward the Burke's lawyer fees. Once I have the donation site properly promoted, I'm sure that we will be able to come up with the full amount.

I know how difficult it is to spare anything with gas prices and the cost of living, so if you'd like to help out but can't afford to donate, you could do so by spreading the word.

We are also going to be raising funds during the "Walk for Gage" day in Shreveport, Louisiana. So many companies have already helped out by donating products and gift certificates that we are hoping to raffle off. Below is a list of people who are contributing materially.

The very nice-looking, gifted, motivated, and generous Marc of Outspoken Graphics has designed a sticker for Gage that we will be selling on the Justice for Gage website.

.. Skin Works Tattoo in Bossier City, LA donated a $50 gift certificate, along with several $15 coupons.

Check out their website: http://www. skinworks. net

.. Dr. Lott of Pet Care Animal Hospital in Haughton, LA donated $65 worth of pet products.

.. Shawna's Posh Pets in Bossier City, LA donated a gift certificate for $32 toward a full pet grooming, a gift certificate for a free nail trim, and also a gift certificate awarding a grooming service fit for large, short hair dogs (bath, nail trim, and tooth brushing).

- .. Barb's House of Grooming donated a pet bed shaped like a slipper (so cute!). The bed accomodates a small dog or cat. She also donated a small LSU teddy (Official Team Merchandise).

.. Pets Mart in Shreveport, Louisiana donated free puppy training class, and many pet toys for both large and small dogs (Kong brand dog sticks, tug ropes, plush toys, balls, frisbees, etc.).

.. Sarah Hull is giving us 6 kiddie pools to be used during the walk for any pets who might want to cool off a bit.

.. Critter Company in Bossier City donated several boxes of food and a large bone.

Aside from the website, the donations of money, and the donations to be raffled at the walk, we are going to try to become a nonprofit organization . It's all in the works.
